Trossachs Pier and the
Steamer Sir Walter Scott
The Trossachs Pier
The Steamer's Story
home
The Trossachs are
probably best known for Loch Katrine and it's 100 year old steamship 'SS Sir Walter Scott'
which sails daily throughout the season from the picturesque Trossachs pier. The loch is
owned by the west of Scotland Water board and supplies water to reservoirs near Milngavie
which in turn provide water to Glasgow. The old steamer is actually the last in a series
of ships which have sailed the loch. The Sir Walter Scott was built on Clydeside and was
sailed up loch Lomond to Inversnaid where it was dismantled to be drawn overland by teams
of horses to Stronachlachar at the western end of Loch Katrine.
At Stronachlachar it was re-assembled and
re-launched to sail the loch from Trossachs pier, a function still performed by this old
stalwart. She is hauled ashore every winter for maintenance.
SS Sir Walter Scott Excursions
The steamer sails regularly throughout the season. Two options are available:

and return by road. (Bicycle or be collected by car - no public transport).
